BBC: A committee official said the simple chants and gestures were designed to help spectators cheer for their favourite athletes in a smooth, civilized manner.
…..Li Ning, president of the Beijing Etiquette Institute, told the Beijing News that the cheer was in line with general international principles for cheering, while at the same time possessing characteristics of Chinese culture.
Could somebody please direct me to the “general international principles for cheering” ? I can’t help the inescapable thought that I somehow contrbuted to New Zealand losing out on yet another Rugby World Cup by cheering incorrectly. I have searched exaustively for these “general international principles for cheering” to no avail. Could these be hidden deep somewhere in the UN archives or are they international in the same sense that world championships are to Americans?
Sadly, this is will do nothing to dispel commnly held Chinese stereotypes in the (puke) west.
